Top Rated: SUV

A sport-utility vehicle (SUV) is a hybrid of body styles and hardware engineered to provide a highly capable off-road driving mode. It usually mates a wagon or convertible with a higher amount of ground clearance and a four-wheel-drive system. In the past, the SUV label was applied strictly to truck-derived vehicles with four-wheel drive. That definition has been extended to include vehicles with all-wheel drive and vehicles designed from the ground up, with neither car nor truck roots. Another characteristic of SUVs can be a transmission with a low range, used for off-road operation--but today, some SUVs offer a choice of traction systems under the same body style, some with a low range and most without. The Car Connection dubs those vehicles all SUVs, so long as the on-road driving experience is altered or modified so that the vehicle can safely be driven off-road.
